Toyota has announced a major recall to replace the driver’s side power window master switch, affecting 7.4 million cars globally, including 2.5 million in the United States.
According to a release by Toyota due to an improper application of a grease on the switch it may develop a “notchy” or sticky feel over time. A safety issue may result if a common lubricant is applied to solve the sticky feeling, as a new lubricant can melt a part of the assembly and could cause a fire to result.
Recalled cars will be inspected, the switch assembly will be disassembled and a special flourine grease applied to solve the issue.
According to Toyota, owners of affected cars (see the list below) will be notified by late October.
The recall is the largest since Ford announced it would fix 8 million vehicles in 1996 due to defective ignition switches.
Vehicle owners with questions are asked to call the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331 or visit www.toyota.com/recall.

• 2007 to 2008 Yaris (approx. 110,300)
• 2007 to 2009 RAV4 (approx. 336,400)
• 2007 to 2009 Tundra (approx. 337,100)

• 2007 to 2009 Camry Hybrid (approx. 116,800)
• 2008 to 2009 Scion xD (approx. 34,400)
• 2008 to 2009 Scion xA (approx. 77,500)
• 2008 to 2009 Sequoia (approx. 38,500)
• 2008 Highlander (approx. 135,400)
• 2008 Highlander Hybrid (approx. 23,200)
• 2009 Corolla (approx. 270,900)
